What is BackupLABS?

BackupLABS provides an automated way for businesses of all sizes to protect their critical data that is held within popular cloud based applications. The vast majority of these cloud based apps, such as GitHub, GitLab, Trello, Asana, Notion and Jira provide no backup facility at all. Customers are putting more and more critical data on these platforms and the providers T&Cs always state that the customer needs to backup and protect their own data. This is also known as the “Shared Responsibility Model”

The cloud provider themselves will always backup their internal systems, but do so from an operational and platform point of view. They never provide granular backups/restore solutions for their actual customers, and operate as a “shared responsibility model”. At best, they provide very simplistic, limited 7-30 day retention that can be easily broken by a rogue employee or hacker performing a permanent delete.

This creates a huge problem for the business’s that use these platforms and their data is at risk from: user error, rogue employees, virus/malware targeting the app and cloud provider access issues. Other studies have shown that in the case of users accidentally deleting data, 70% of users don’t even remember when they did it. Even if a cloud app has a basic 30 day retention, this is often not a long enough period of time once the loss has been discovered. It has also been known for a cloud app to accidentally delete data as what happened with GitHub in 2017 and OneDrive in 2021.

There is also often legal and regulatory requirements to backup critical data for a number of businesses. This is especially common if the business is looking for ISO or similar certification or their insurance and/or board requires it. HIPPA regulation also states that you need to demonstrate restore and recoverability. There are already solutions to backup more well known platforms such as Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and Salesforce, but rarely a solution for the other up and coming cloud app systems.
